5 ways to stay happy & healthy in college

There is a phrase that you will hear a lot over the course of your freshman year of college, "This is the best year of your life." Yes, college is super fun, but there are times when it gets hard. This is completely natural and comes from living on your own, especially away from home. Personally, I am a home body, but I also like to stay busy... because if I'm not busy, there's a problem. So, I made a list of things that help me stay happy and healthy over the course of my freshman year, and I hope it helps you too!

Starting off strong (with a very obvious solution to staying healthy) is keeping a workout routine. It doesn't have to be anything intense, just something to keep you active. Exercising is a prime way to let off steam naturally, balance out your head, and keep your body in shape. I've tried going to multiple different workout classes, but my favorite this far is Orange Theory. The exercises include running, core, and weights, all things I could use! The staff is extremely encouraging and kind, and they always try to make the classes fun. Although I don't always love going, the after math of working out boosts my energy, and all together, makes me feel much happier.

The second thing on the list tends to be overlooked, and that is simply spending time with friends. And no, I don't mean on the weekends at a party, I'm talking about genuine quality time like going on dinner dates, walks, and even running errands together. Basically, when you have to do something outside your dorm room, take a friend because they will make it 10 times more entertaining. If you make an effort to spend time with someone, it will pay off. I am thankful to have such a solid friend base through my sorority, but there are so many students on campus that are similar to you, you just might have to be patient while trying to find your group. My friends make me happy, so in return, surrounding myself with them creates a happier environment.

Next involves your environment, and that is creating your dorm room as a safe space. It is a must to feel comfortable in your living space, and going the extra mile to make it cozy and calming will add so much peace to your day. Picture frames, blankets, and even stuffed animals (if you're into that!) will bring a piece of home with you to college. You spend so much time on the go, but when you have time to spend time by yourself, it's in your dorm. Keeping a space that is comforting (and clean) will provide you with so much comfort in a new space.

Going back to the physical health side of things, don’t forget to take VITAMINS! You are surrounded by new people everyday, which means you are encountering so many germs! lol. Basically, take your vitamins and watch what you put in your body because that will affect your health. Being sick throughout your freshman year would really put a toll on things, so being mindful of your intake will be good for you, in the short run and the long run.

Last, but certainly not least, is keeping in touch with loved ones and friends. Call your parents, they miss you! Simply checking in on the people who love you will make their day and make you feel better too! Not only should you stay connected with your family but with high school friends as well. It's so easy to make an effort to stay in touch with others at different schools. Catching up with my home town friends always makes my day, and it's fun to see what’s going on in their life too. Needless to say, staying in touch with ones who care for you will make this transition into college feel much more normal.

So, college can be scary. You are in a new home, new friends, and a new school, but trying to put some of these suggestions into your routine will add genuine happiness to your life.
